Mr Simon Ellis

Medicolegal Expertise

Mr Simon Ellis has over 25 years’ experience of producing specialist orthopaedic medicolegal reports for the Court. During his undergraduate medical training at Cambridge he studied Medical Law and Ethics in his final year. During his senior orthopaedic training he produced personal injury reports. He was appointed consultant to Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in 1996 and continues as a consultant in independent practice, specialising in knee surgery. He maintains regular medicolegal training in order to remain up to date and is an APIL accredited orthopaedic expert.

His scope of practice covers both personal injury reports and specialist medical negligence reports.

He worked as a trauma and orthopaedic consultant at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford, Kent for 9 years and now continues as a lower limb specialist in the independent sector. He works throughout Kent and attends regular training in order to keep up to date.

Mr Smith joined Kent Medicolegal in October 2021. He has over 8 years' experience and is able to produce medicolegal reports covering most aspects of orthopaedic trauma.

Personal Injury Reporting

Mr Ellis and Mr Smith both have the relevant expertise to provide general orthopaedic musculoskeletal reports. Their particular speciality is lower limb trauma, particularly for patients suffering multiple injuries, complex lower limb trauma and those suffering lower limb amputation as a result of trauma. Mr Ellis has been providing personal injury reports since 1990 and has followed the legal changes as a result of the Woolf Report. The reports he produces are a mixture of low and high value cases. His reports are compliant with up to date guidelines.

Medical Negligence Reporting

Mr Ellis provides specialist medical negligence reports in respect of knee surgery both for claimant and defendant. He is able to provide opinions on potential negligence following note review. He also provides formal causation and liability reports from medical record review. His training and expertise enables him to provide formal condition and prognosis reports including the ‘what if’ opinion required from the courts in these cases. Mr Ellis also has experience in providing reports relating to metal allergy claims. All reports are compliant with up to date guidelines.

Jackie, Kent Medicolegal’s practice manager, is able to arrange all aspects of medicolegal work.

Mr Ellis and Mr Smith both carry out medicolegal reports at the Spire Alexandra, Walderslade and KIMS Hospital, Maidstone. Mr Ellis also goes to the Spire Montefiore Hospital Hove, and Mr Smith to the Chaucer Hospital in Canterbury. Both Mr Ellis and Mr Smith are happy to carry out consultations via Zoom and home visits where appropriate.
